On
25th of July 1952, Sangeet
Shyamala was set up with
5 students and 2 artists. Pandit
Maniramji, Pandit Jasraj and Smt.
Manjulika Roychowdhury lent their
support and encouragement. It
is a school for art & culture
where classical music –
both vocal & instrumental
and dances such as Bharatnatyam,
Kathakali and Manipuri are taught.
In the year 1955, Art classes
were also introduced.
Sangeet
Shyamala students have enacted
several famous plays such as
Swapna Yamini, Sagarika, Vasantutsava,
Ajanta Ki Marmavani, Kasturi
Mriga. When Swapna Yamini was
staged, the famous writer Smt.
Mahadevi Verma graced the occasion
by her presence.
In the year 1978, an annual
award was introduced for an
artist. Among the award recipients
are Ganesh Pyne, Srimati Allah
Jilai Bai, Guru Kelucharan Mahapatro,
Pandit Maniram, Guru Bipui Singh,
Sri A.T. Kanan and Pandit Vijay
Shankar.
Today Sangeet Shyamala has
a total strength of over 250
students. In 1978, a branch
of Sangeet Shyamala was opened
in Delhi under the supervisor
of Srimati Soara Tewari. |
